"Leading role" for IT / software: what counts
Key answer
What works in IT / software
- Architectural decisions adopted by the team and affecting the product
- Technical leadership - code review, mentoring, development standards
- Responsibility for a critical module or service with a measurable result
Traps that cost the criterion
- Only a job description without actual impact
- List of technologies without a role in decision-making
- No evidence of scale - teams, users, load, or business impact
What the officer has to find
It is not enough to show that the applicant was a qualified employee, manager, or participant at a well-known company. It must be proven that the role was substantively leading or critical, within a significant organization or initiative, and that this is supported by specific evidence rather than only general support letters or a job description.
- The organization, department, project, or initiative in which the role was performed had recognized significance, reputation, or substantial impact in the relevant field.
- The applicant's role was central to the success, direction, results, or key functions of the organization or project.
Where it falls apart: The evidence describes job duties but does not show the applicant's actual influence on key decisions or results.
How it is worded
The applicant's contribution was critical to the success of the product, feature, or initiative because it ensured strategic coherence, technical soundness, and achievement of key results.
Avoid: His work was useful to the company and was viewed positively by colleagues.
What else IT / software is asked for
- Evidence of role: org chart, letters, releases, architectural decisions
- Compensation data: offers, W-2s/contracts, salary surveys
- Awards or publications are local and not selective
- High salary is not matched to the relevant market

«Actually this criterion has more examples that should fit you, like senior faculty/research position or leading or critical role for distinguished division of an institution. As far as I remember, you wrote that you're a lab head, that probably fits under leading role at least.»

«To prove a leading role you have to attach the hierarchy, to show that you're in the company's leadership (or close to it), plus your KPIs should specify your impact on the company's key metrics. Basically, in my understanding, for a leading role you need to be at least head of department.»

«Realistically it's the CEO of a distinguished company and that's it, or say a department head if it's a critical role, or the founder of a group. There are lots of cases with 1 letter and 1 role each. It's not about quantity.»
