Family questions at the visa interview

Updated: Author: Alina Kanametova

The family block for the principal applicant and dependants: marriage, children, relatives, assets back home. Spouses’ answers are compared, so go over the basic facts in advance.

Questions (11)

keyAre you married? Do you have children?
Answer exactly as in your DS-260, including children from previous marriages. Family composition is the first thing checked against the form.
Do you have family or ties in the US?
Answer honestly. Ties are not a bar by themselves, but the answer must be consistent with your plans.
What will your spouse do after the move?
A short realistic plan; the spouse may be asked the same separately.
Where are your parents and siblings? Do they plan to move?
Answer honestly and calmly; it is about your ties, not a trap.
Is this your first marriage? When was the wedding?
The date and place as on the certificate. Mention previous marriages yourself: the officer sees the divorce documents in the file.
Where did you meet your spouse?
A short factual story. Both spouses' answers must line up - go over the basic facts beforehand so nerves do not trip you up.
Where do your closest relatives live?
Country and city for each parent and sibling, as in your form. Always disclose relatives in the US.
Do you know each other's parents?
A simple check that the family is real. Answer factually, including 'no, we have not met in person' - that is fine.
How many guests were at your wedding?
An approximate number, the same from both spouses. If you registered without a celebration, say so - that is not a problem.
Are your relatives planning to move to the US after you?
Answer factually. Relatives' plans do not hurt your case, but an invented answer that contradicts their own filings does.
Do you own property, a business or other assets back home?
For an immigrant visa, assets back home are not a negative and need not be hidden. What matters is that the answer matches your filings and form.
