- 2×Recommendation letter template
- 2×What if these were originally employees/subordinates of the petitioner who left and now work at other companies/opened their own companies and write recommendation letters about how the petitioner's methods positively influenced them and their company; could this be a contribution to the industry?
- 2×What if the same person who signed my opinion letter for the review of a scientific article signs this recommendation letter? Would that be acceptable? That is, two letters from the same person: an opinion letter and a recommendation letter.
Community answers
- Can 5+ years of experience be proven only with recommendation letters?
- Recommendation letters alone may not be enough, especially if they are from students or dependent individuals. It is better to add employment records, contracts, certificates, portfolios, publications, independent evidence, and other objective proof.
Where people go wrong - from the chats
- mistakeA weak strategy is to use recommendation letters only as general praise for the professional; the letters should support specific criteria, contributions, independent significance, and the applicant's role.
Myths and reality
Myth: It is mandatory to have 8-10 recommendation letters, and each one must be from someone the applicant has personally interacted with.
In reality: There is no fixed required number of recommendation letters. What matters more is their evidentiary value, independence, specificity, and relation to the claimed criteria; the letters may be from experts who know the applicant or from independent specialists, if they can reasonably speak to the applicant's contributions.
Rules and tips from the chats
- ruleFor recommendation letters, it is preferable to use official letterhead. If that is not possible, you should include a clear explanation of the reason. Some repetition across letters is acceptable, but large identical passages look weak.
- ruleRecommendation letters are not formally required, but in practice they are often used as an important part of the evidence, especially to explain the contribution, the significance of the work, and independent recognition.
- ruleRecommendation letters and key supporting documents are best prepared with handwritten signatures, not facsimile signatures. Credential evaluations are sometimes used for diplomas and education, but for EB-1A the diploma itself is not a required separate criterion and more often serves as additional context.
- ruleRecommendation letters for EB-1/O-1 should ideally be collected not only from acquaintances, but also from people with their own achievements and recognition. It is useful to have at least some recommenders from the United States, but this is not a universal mandatory requirement.
- tipDuring administrative processing, additional forms and materials are often requested, such as an expanded questionnaire, CV, information about studies, research work, a thesis or degree project, or recommendation letters. It is best to prepare concise, structured versions of these documents in advance.
- tipFor study and research visas, additional materials are often requested: CV, publication list, research plan, project descriptions, academic advisor or employer information, and recommendation letters.
- tipRecommendation letters for EB-1, O-1, and EB-2 NIW are best made as specific as possible: describe achievements, contributions, the applicant's role, and facts that can then be used as evidence under the petition criteria.
- tipRecommendation letters are usually collected from several independent sources, including employers, headquarters, partners, or recognized experts, but it is important that the letters confirm the applicant's specific contributions and level.
- tipRecommendation letters, letters of intent, offers, and investment confirmations are best prepared on official organization letterhead, with a signature and attachments confirming authority, funds, or assets. Otherwise, the officer may doubt the authenticity.
- tipWhen filing an O-1 petition from abroad on your own, it is important to separate the stages: preparing forms and evidence, paying fees, mailing the petition to the correct address, waiting for I-129 approval, and then the consular stage. Having a job offer and recommendation letters by itself does not replace a properly prepared petitioner, offer, and description of the future work.
