"Awards" for Science / research: what counts

Key answer

In Science / research the "Awards" criterion is carried by 3 kinds of evidence below; the petitions that fail it usually stumble on the traps in the second list.

What works in Science / research

  • Prestigious international or national scientific awards for research contributions
  • Awards from respected professional societies or academic organizations
  • Prizes with a transparent selection process and proven significance in the field

Traps that cost the criterion

  • Listing internal recognition with no external recognition
  • Mixing scientific awards with grants, scholarships, or positions
  • Not explaining the selection criteria and the significance of the award

What the officer has to find

It is not enough simply to show the existence of a diploma, certificate, or mention of an award. The award must be documented as connected to the petitioner's personal achievements, its relevance to the claimed field must be shown, and the level, criteria, and reputation of the award must be proven to objectively indicate recognition above the ordinary professional level. For EB-1/O-1, the award must support a finding of the petitioner's high level of recognition together with other evidence.

  • The award relates to the field of the claimed endeavor and reflects a professional achievement specifically in that field.
  • The award has national or international recognition, or, for less significant awards, forms part of the total body of evidence of recognition.

Where it falls apart: It has not been shown that the award is nationally or internationally recognized, or independent sources about its reputation are missing.

The full methodology of the "Awards" criterion

How it is worded

The award is directly related to the claimed field of endeavor and reflects a professional achievement in the same field in which the petitioner continues to work.

Avoid: The award was more local in nature and does not carry particular weight.

What else Science / research is asked for

  • Publication list with journal metrics
  • Citation reports and comparative analysis
  • Not enough independent evidence of impact
  • Weak link between the contribution and recognition in the field

From community discussions

  • «I'm not arguing here that he apparently checked it poorly, but when you buy a package service and not just a lawyer, you expect more. And why was he told to go for EB-2 NIW when he already came with a pretty good package for EB-1 (over 20 years working as a research scientist with a bunch of patents, awards) - he only needed to add media.»

Kate · from public community chats

  • «I won the A' Design Awards, and they admitted me into 6 associations at once, among them IAD - International Association of Designers. I think it's worth going around to contests or sending out applications based on awards you already have to similar organizations.»

Andrey · from public community chats

  • «in an article about your project you should also feature in it and explain why exactly your involvement was so important. Mentioning you as a participant doesn't earn you any perks if you didn't win this competition.»
