"Awards" for Marketing / PR: what counts

Key answer

In Marketing / PR the "Awards" criterion is carried by 3 kinds of evidence below; the petitions that fail it usually stumble on the traps in the second list.

What works in Marketing / PR

  • Measurable contribution to marketing and business goals
  • An original idea based on audience insight
  • Proven results: reach, conversion, growth, efficiency

Traps that cost the criterion

  • Describing activity without a connection to the goal
  • A polished case study with no verified metrics
  • Unclear team role and scope of impact

What the officer has to find

It is not enough simply to show the existence of a diploma, certificate, or mention of an award. The award must be documented as connected to the petitioner's personal achievements, its relevance to the claimed field must be shown, and the level, criteria, and reputation of the award must be proven to objectively indicate recognition above the ordinary professional level. For EB-1/O-1, the award must support a finding of the petitioner's high level of recognition together with other evidence.

  • The award has national or international recognition, or, for less significant awards, forms part of the total body of evidence of recognition.
  • The selection criteria show that the award is granted for outstanding achievements, expertise, or a significant contribution, not for participation, length of service, payment of a fee, or internal loyalty.

Where it falls apart: The award was received by a team or employer, but the materials do not prove the petitioner's personal contribution and individual recognition.

The full methodology of the "Awards" criterion

How it is worded

The award is directly related to the claimed field of endeavor and reflects a professional achievement in the same field in which the petitioner continues to work.

Avoid: It cannot be stated with confidence what exactly the award was given for.

What else Marketing / PR is asked for

  • Case studies with metrics: revenue growth, CAC, ROAS, retention, market share
  • Letters from executives, clients, and independent experts with specifics
  • There are metrics, but the applicant's personal role is not proven
  • Publications look like PR or are not about the applicant personally

From community discussions

  • «The award has to be national or international. And you have to be the winner among hundreds of participants. The best of the best. A certificate for a presentation is better suited to the contribution criterion, if you include that conference there.»

  • «The criterion clearly says the award must be given to you personally. A student's award is not the coach's award. It's his personal award as an athlete. You can add all of this to the description. And spell out how hard it is to train a champion and what a talented coach you are.»

  • «If you can prove this award is national level, there should be some kind of confirmation that it's run not just by a university but by the ministry of education and that the whole country takes part. And even better, other countries too. You need to present it as if you won your country's championship in your field.»
