"Original contribution" for Science / research: what counts
Key answer
What works in Science / research
- A new testable hypothesis or theory
- A method that improves accuracy or reproducibility
- Data or results that change the understanding of the field
Traps that cost the criterion
- Retelling known works without a new conclusion
- Untestable claims or weak methodology
- Overstating the significance of a narrow result
What the officer has to find
It is not enough to show that the work was useful, complex, well paid, in demand in the market, or performed at a well-known organization. It must be shown that the petitioner's specific original contribution was recognized as significant in the professional field by independent sources and that the evidence allows the officer to reach a favorable merits finding within the overall case assessment.
- The contribution is significant to the relevant field, not just to the employer, client, team, or a single product.
- Significance is supported by independent evidence, such as use of the result by other professionals, implementation, citation, licensing, industry recognition, or documented impact.
Where it falls apart: The materials confirm a position, responsibilities, experience, or participation in projects, but do not show the independent significance of the contribution.

How it is worded
The method/process/model he developed had not previously been used in a comparable form and led to a qualitatively new level of efficiency.
Avoid: I was involved in supporting the process and coordinating the work.
What else Science / research is asked for
- Publication list with journal metrics
- Citation reports and comparative analysis
- Not enough independent evidence of impact
- Weak link between the contribution and recognition in the field

From community discussions
«Where I was invited to present my methodology (and that's a contribution), I wrote about it: mentioned it in the recommendation letters, attached the speaker certificate, and so on.»
community member · from public community chats
«It's wiser to wait, write articles in the meantime, file a patent, gather strong certificates - and only then file. Conjuring a case out of thin air and rushing it in is not the best move.»

«You need to explain to the officer what kind of award this is. There are industry awards - they're given for contribution to the industry. It has an official description and a description of the merits it's given for, and a finite number of people who have received it. A certificate from inside a company is not considered such an award, since it's an internal function within the organization.»
