Administrative processing: what it is

Administrative processing: definition

Key answer

Administrative processing (AP) is an additional consular review of your documents and background after the interview, usually issued as a 221(g) refusal. It is not a final denial but a pause: most applicants receive the visa once it ends. It most often affects technical and scientific professions.

The causes often combine: missing documents, security checks (especially for TAL fields), questions about facts in the petition, long stays in sensitive countries, a name match with watch lists. During AP your recommenders may be called. Once assigned, the check cannot be avoided, and it can happen without TAL.

Possible outcomes: visa issuance, return of the petition to USCIS for review, or a final refusal. A Refused status in CEAC under 221(g) is a technical marker that the check is ongoing. The community advises against daily CEAC monitoring and suggests polite official-email follow-ups with the consulate.
