Expedite request: what it is

Expedite request: definition

Key answer

An expedite request asks USCIS to speed up a case under set criteria: severe financial loss, emergencies or humanitarian reasons, a USCIS error, US government interest. The bar is high, the decision is discretionary, and it must be backed by documents. It does not apply to consular administrative processing.

Expedite is the second rung of the escalation ladder after a simple processing-time inquiry (Case Outside Normal Processing Time). Do not confuse it with premium processing (I-907): premium is a paid service with a fixed window for the I-129/I-140, while expedite is a free request on exceptional grounds.

If expedite does not help, next come a congressional inquiry (representative, then senator), the USCIS Ombudsman (DHS-7001) and, as a last resort, a writ of mandamus. All of these move timelines but do not change the evidence assessment.
