Scopus: what it is

Scopus: definition

Key answer

Scopus is an international journal-indexing database (Elsevier). Scopus indexing is a recognized signal that a journal is peer-reviewed with real reach; the Q1-Q4 quartiles show its standing within the discipline. For the scholarly-articles criterion a Scopus-indexed publication usually weighs more than one in a non-indexed outlet.

Check a journal against the official Scopus source list; Web of Science is the parallel database. A quartile is not a USCIS requirement but a strength signal: Q1-Q2 reads stronger, yet what decides is the substance of your article and your authorship role.

In the community, Scopus publications regularly appear in approved EB-1A and NIW cases - as part of the scholarly-articles criterion and as the base for citations. These are member observations, not a guarantee.

  • «Not a single letter has an addressee and none state that it's for the visa. The law contains no mandatory requirement that this must be stated in the letter. It says: recommendation letter. I can take recommendations for many purposes. The same letter can be used in different ways: post it on a website, show it to the association, put it in my case.»

  • «USCIS talks about comparable evidence if direct evidence can't be found. Membership in an association in an adjacent field can count if there are few associations for the specific profession.»

  • «You can have membership in organizations/federations/associations where you don't receive a salary, list them as current. And in general it's all just for show, just to fill in the information about you, they're not going to dig up your organizations' documentation and check the termination orders.»
