Electronic filing and the NBC: I-140 and I-129 times in 2026

Electronic filing (IOE) and the NBC

IOE / MSC online-filed forms; I-485

The IOE prefix means the case lives in the USCIS electronic system (online filing) rather than being tied to a geographic center. Such cases often show a detailed event history in the USCIS online account. The MSC prefix is usually associated with the National Benefits Center (NBC), which is involved in processing forms such as I-485.

How to read your receipt number

A USCIS receipt number is three letters followed by ten digits. The first three letters - the prefix - identify the processing center: IOE corresponds to "Electronic filing (IOE) and the NBC". This is routing, not status: the prefix tells you nothing about approval or denial.

How long USCIS takes now

USCIS no longer shows these forms center by center: its processing-times tool reports one office, "Service Center Operations (SCOPS)". So the honest answer to "is this center faster" is that the agency does not publish per-center speed for I-129 and I-140. The figure is the time in which 80% of cases were completed (our read of Oct 2, 2026).

Form and category80% of cases within
I-129, O visa (O-1)14.5 mo
I-140, EB-1A32.5 mo
I-140, EB-1B15 mo
I-140, EB-2 NIW30 mo
I-485, employment-based42.5 mo
I-765 with a pending I-485, (c)(9)12.5 mo
I-131, advance parole26.5 mo

Premium processing (I-907) does not change this table: it sets a 15 or 45 business-day clock for the petition. Month-by-month history: USCIS processing times; premium: how premium processing works.

What the community reports

Community members note that IOE cases show more intermediate statuses in the online account than paper ones - this helps track movement but does not speed up adjudication.

This is community-chat experience, not official data. Current timelines are in the USCIS processing times.

FAQ

What does IOE mean in a receipt number?
IOE is a case number in the USCIS electronic system, not a building code. Online filings get it; the USCIS page Forms Available to File Online (updated Oct 7, 2026) says plainly that a case filed by mail can carry an IOE number too. With such a number you can add I-907 (premium) or I-485 supplements online to a pending I-140 or I-485.
Is IOE faster than paper filing?
There is no official data on it: USCIS does not publish separate times for IOE cases. Its processing-times tool shows I-129 and I-140 as one row for all centers (Service Center Operations), and the filing method is not a factor there. Online filing gives something else: a lower fee for several forms and a detailed case history in the account.
Does the receipt prefix affect the decision?
No. The prefix only shows the processing center. The decision is made by an officer based on your evidence, not on the center.

From community practice

  • What determines the strength of evidence is not the fact itself but its context: scale, selectivity and independent confirmation. This runs through almost every community case review.

  • Support letters are stronger when written by independent experts familiar with your work who cite concrete results rather than general praise.

  • Field chats advise gathering evidence for a specific criterion from the start, rather than bolting it onto the petition at the last moment.

From community discussions

  • «Marriage and birth certificates are needed in the original + with a translation into English. It's enough to certify the translation in the simplest form, a notary and apostille aren't needed. Administrative checks are fairly frequent: I was additionally asked for a list of travels and workplaces for the last 15 years, in the end the check lasted 1.5 months.»

  • «If you were granted O-1, you don't actually know which criteria were credited to you and which weren't. 'Advertorial' articles really don't fit the claim of extraordinary ability, but if you mechanically hit 3 other criteria, then they just didn't pay attention to it.»

  • «They also ask about the essence of the extraordinary ability. And they may doubt that the person really did and does what's written in the petition. If a person flounders in their own petition, then that's a reason for the officer to wonder whose extraordinary achievements are so nicely described in the petition.»
