Who uses this consulate

Prepare for the interviewHow the O-1 and EB-1 consular process works

Renewing a US visa in Astana

The second designated post for Russian nonimmigrant visas; Russian immigrant visas are not handled here (they go to Warsaw, and IR-5 also to Almaty and Tashkent). Living in Kazakhstan is not required.

Without an interview
For a Russian without Kazakh residence - no, for the same reason as in Warsaw: the post is designated, not the country of nationality or residence.
Next appointment (State Department, 2026-09-17)
B1/B2 - 1 month; petition-based work visas (H, L, O) - 1 month; students (F, M, J) - no data (NA).

Per the embassy and State Department pages

  • Since May 2, 2025 the consular sections in Astana and Almaty finalize appointments at 5:00 pm three business days before the interview: by then the DS-160 must be complete and submitted.
  • Booking, payment and support go through the official appointment site the embassy page links to; the fee is neither refunded nor transferred.
  • The next appointment per the State Department table of Sep 17, 2026: B1/B2 - 1 month, petition-based work visas (H, L, O, P, Q) - 1 month, no data for students (F, M, J).

What the chats report: 54 messages on nonimmigrant visas in 10 chats, Jan 1 - Sep 30, 2026

  • O-1 interviews in September were described as 10 minutes of simple questions about the work and US plans; O-1 visas issued were reported in April, July and September.
  • Slot-wait estimates diverge: June reports spoke of 4-6 months, a Sep 30 message of "another half year", while on Sep 16 a member booked a little over a month ahead.
  • Checks happen too: an IT O-1 went to administrative processing in June, and an H-1B with a 221(g) sheet and a request to open social media waited 8.5 months and ended up in a mandamus suit.

From English-speaking community reports (Reddit), October 2025 - July 2026, 5 posts

B1/B2 - 3 posts, F-1 - 1, H-1B - 1. Russians - 2, a foreigner living in Russia - 1.

  • Booking questions: a foreigner living in Russia asked whether he may apply in Astana, colleagues asked whether they can be interviewed together, a Russian asked about post-interview checks for H-1B; the posts got no substantive answers.
  • F-1: a renewal in August 2024 ended with a 221(g) and a request for a CV and a list of publications; in January 2026, 17 months later, the applicant was still waiting and the embassy replied with a template.

From Russian-language forum reports (forum.awd.ru), October 2025 - September 2026, 198 posts

72 applicant stories: B1/B2 - 63, F-1 - 2, H-1B - 1, a work visa - 1, type not stated - 5. Where nationality is stated (68 stories) all are Russians, most of them travelling from Russia. Another 31 posts are eyewitness notes about the line and booking.

  • B1/B2 outcomes in these stories: 43 issued (2 after a 221(g)), 15 refused (8 under 214(b), 6 with no stated basis, 1 after a 221(g)), 3 still waiting on a 221(g) when they posted. One of the threads exists to share successes, so the approval share here is inflated: on particular days in January, June, July and September 2026 eyewitnesses in the line put refusals at 40% to more than half, and on Jan 28 and Jul 29, 2026 they described almost nothing but refusals.
  • Approvals went more often to retirees and families visiting children or relatives in the US and to applicants with earlier US visas; refusals more often to young single applicants, couples with no relatives in the US (IT workers among them) and families leaving a child at home. Twice an approval was reversed: in January 2026 a couple with valid visas was refused a visa for their child and had their own visas cancelled; in June 2026 a family booked through the FIFA programme was first told they were approved, then refused, and the wife's already printed visa was cancelled.
  • Questions: purpose, job and years in it, children, relatives in the US and their status, earlier trips; officers often ask for every old passport and leaf through the stamps, documents are rarely looked at - occasionally a copy of a relative's passport or green card, a conference letter, an employment letter. From spring 2026 applicants were asked whether they fear returning to Russia and about recent trips to Africa. An old DS-160 photo is not accepted - applicants are sent to retake it.
  • The passport with the visa usually comes back the next day: median 1 day across 31 stories, up to 3 days (12 days with delivery to Moscow). The 221(g) cases here asked for a CV, an employment letter or proof of a relative's US status; the check lasted 8 to 40 days and ended both in visas and in refusals. After the check the visa centre accepted the passport only in person in Astana.
  • Booking: in October - December 2025 slots appeared 1-4 months ahead; on Feb 4, 2026 summer and September 2026 were released in bulk, after which the nearest dates were July 2027, then 2028; in summer 2026 people quoted spring 2027 with booking bots and 2028 without them. Student slots (F, J, M) last appeared in any number in February 2026. World Cup ticket holders got expedited appointments within weeks in spring 2026.
  • Procedure: participants say that since Sep 6, 2025 Russians without Kazakh residence are seen only in Astana. The visit takes about 1.5 hours: one line shared with Kazakh citizens, three windows (documents, fingerprints, officer), the appointment time is nominal. The consular fee was paid with a foreign card: a transfer from Russia to a Kazakh bank account did not go through (March 2026).

Community questions on the consular stage →

From community practice

  • An RFE is not a denial. Members note that a structured response with additional independent evidence often leads to approval.

  • A strong petition usually meets more than the required minimum of three criteria, with a margin on each - common advice in chats to reduce RFE risk.

  • What determines the strength of evidence is not the fact itself but its context: scale, selectivity and independent confirmation. This runs through almost every community case review.
