"Authorship" for Education / psychology: what counts

Key answer

In Education / psychology the "Authorship" criterion is carried by 3 kinds of evidence below; the petitions that fail it usually stumble on the traps in the second list.

What works in Education / psychology

  • Article in a peer-reviewed scholarly journal on education
  • Clear personal contribution by the author: study design, data analysis, conclusions
  • Citations, indexing, and connection of the publication to educational practice

Traps that cost the criterion

  • Publications without peer review or in questionable journals
  • Authorship without a provable contribution to the research
  • General articles without scientific methodology or data

What the officer has to find

Sufficiency is usually assessed under the preponderance of the evidence standard: it must be shown that it is more likely than not that the applicant is in fact the author of relevant professional or scholarly publications in qualifying outlets; the mere existence of texts may be insufficient if the status of the outlet, the nature of the publications, the connection to the field, and the evidentiary value in the overall record are not established.

  • the applicant is the author or co-author of the materials, not merely a person mentioned, an interviewee, an editor, or a project participant
  • the materials are scholarly, professional, or specialized publications in the relevant field, not advertising, instructional, or general informational texts

Where it falls apart: blogs, press releases, marketing materials, corporate pages, or general articles are submitted without signs of a professional or scholarly publication

The full methodology of the "Authorship" criterion

How it is worded

The submitted materials confirm that the applicant is identified specifically as an author or coauthor of publications, not as a person mentioned in the text, interviewee, editor, consultant, or project participant.

Avoid: The applicant was mentioned in the article as a project participant.

What else Education / psychology is asked for

  • Proof of peer review - editorial systems, certificates, letters
  • Contracts, payroll statements, market pay comparisons
  • The applicant's role is described as a routine job duty
  • Awards are local or student-level, without competitiveness or selection criteria

From community discussions

  • «If he's a research worker and positions his contribution as being purely to science, then all the listed metrics will be mandatory for him. However, if your area of professional interest is tied to business development and you have a PhD - then greater weight is carried by contribution to the development of the profession, which is confirmed among other things by publications and interviews on professional platforms.»

  • «Letters always serve as supporting evidence of contribution. You should have something tangible, formalized. A patent, a technology, a product, etc. That has mass adoption in the industry and brings some benefits to those who use it. And then letters from those who use it and why the technology is applicable and useful for them. As for a publication about contribution, that's apparently clearly not in this criterion, that's authorship of articles.»

  • «You don't have to be actively working, but you can write scientific papers, articles about you can come out in the media, you can develop a method/courses and so on and implement them, getting recommendation letters from your colleagues about the high potential and value of your method (hypothetically)... Basically, nobody cares about your work record book as such. But the activity along the lines of the evidence base has to continue.»
