From community practice
What gives an award weight is not the fact of winning but the selectivity, the jury and the national or international reach - a recurring conclusion in community discussions.
Participation awards or pay-to-win prizes are usually seen by the community as useless for a petition: what matters is that the prize is given for merit.
Membership counts only when admission requires outstanding achievement judged by experts; ordinary paid membership is described in discussions as empty for the case.

From community discussions
«Good afternoon, I am an English teacher with thirty years of experience, I applied for EB-1A as a trilingual educator, and it will soon be a year since my application. It was a concurrent filing, meaning I filed the I-485 at the same time. There were 2 RFEs for the 485 form regarding documents. I have been in the USA for the second year. I was told right away that applying as an English teacher is not worthwhile; a sought-after narrow specialization is needed, along with achievements and publications specifically in that narrow field. I have achievements, but the situation here is not very good right now, approvals are slow, and I would advise newcomers to wait a bit.»

«Hello everyone! 👋 My wife and I are preparing a case for a visa through the NIW/talent category. My wife is an English teacher with over 10 years of experience. She has her own language school (online and offline, with students from different countries). She also collaborated with a U.S. citizen as a native speaker to create joint classes and materials. We are currently gathering evidence, letters of support, and strategizing our application. I would be very grateful for any advice, examples of letters, templates, or just tips on what to emphasize in the teacher/ESL case. 🙏»

«Hello everyone! I am a psychologist-educator and psychoanalyst. My case is at no stage yet. I am still in the stage of contemplation, although I carefully studied the knowledge base last summer. Therefore, I have no questions or feedback at the moment and I am in an observer position. The main thing I am pondering: I primarily have extensive practical experience, not scientific. I have no idea how to package all this into a case and meet the criteria. That’s why I joined the chat, assuming that someone has gone through a similar path.»

«About burnout: I gathered everything and wrote by myself for exactly 9 months. I periodically cried from how overwhelming it was, and I was alone and it would never end. My husband stoically supported me and listened. I have been in regular therapy for about 6 years, which helps a lot! So I highly recommend seeing a psychologist ❤️🩹 My petition has been under review since the end of March NOT through premium processing. I was mentally prepared for at least another year of waiting for a possible interview, assuming approval without an RFE. Then in May, my husband won the green card lottery with a small case 😄 Sorry, don’t hate me 🥹»

Which criteria this field actually closes
- Original contribution to the field: realistic if the specialist created an educational program, methodology, course, training system, or materials that are actually used by other organizations, teachers, or students.
- Critical or leading role: realistic if the candidate was the lead expert, course author, head of an educational project, methodologist, or key instructor at an important school, academy, online platform, or organization.
- Publications and professional materials about the candidate or their work: achievable if there are articles, interviews, program reviews, mentions of the methodology, or expert commentary in relevant media, educational communities, or institutional materials.
- Judging or evaluating other people's work: achievable for teachers, methodologists, and experts if they reviewed competitions, olympiad work, certification assessments, grant applications, or served as external experts.
For the education field, it is important not just to have pedagogical training, but to prove impact on educational practice: what exactly the candidate changed, created, or improved.
Where this field most often falls short
| Criterion | Not met |
|---|---|
| Original contribution | 100% |
| Awards | 92% |

What works in this field and where cases stumble
- judging - most often works as the clearest external indicator of recognition
- authorship - especially articles in notable journals and with visibility in the field
- leading-role - works if the role is truly key and well documented
- media - helps if the coverage is independent and not local
Most often not counted
- awards - often fall short on significance or selectivity
- original-contribution - it is hard to prove uniqueness and real impact
- media - publications are often too weak, local, or promotional
- leading-role - claims of leadership are often poorly supported

What the chats ask about the Education / psychology field
- 3×I have worked for 3 years in the USA as a paraeducator with children with autism. I currently have TPS, re-parole. In Ukraine, I was a primary school teacher and a kindergarten teacher, with 16 years of experience in Ukraine; which visa do I qualify for?
- 2×Should I include diplomas in my profession in the petition? This also indicates growth in knowledge acquisition.
- 2×Visa for educators
- 2×Can I leave my educational platform regarding a critical/leading role, or is it better to remove it? I am applying as a learning science researcher specializing in EdTech. I am concerned that I will again be linked to applied researchers; how should I present this appropriately?
- 2×Given: I am 30 years old, hold a bachelor's degree in management, have 8 years of work experience, and am currently not employed. I have no achievements, but I had a high salary for my position. If I come up with a business idea and use AI to create a business plan, will that give me a chance?
Community answers
- Does administrative processing mean there was an error in the documents or the case is weak?
- Not necessarily. AP can be tied to additional background checks, education, profession, field of work, or qualifications, even if the petition has already been approved by USCIS.
- What should I include in a CV for administrative processing?
- People usually list education, work experience, research, publications, conferences, skills, and current activities. It is important to be factual and consistent with the DS-160 and other forms, without trying to hide sensitive scientific or technical areas.
- Do you need to be an outstanding specialist for EB-2 NIW?
- Not necessarily. Under the advanced degree category, it is enough to document the appropriate education or its equivalent, and the main focus should be on the three NIW prongs: the significance of the project, your ability to advance it, and the benefit of the waiver to the United States.
- Can I use WES or another diploma evaluation as an official document for an immigration case?
- An education evaluation is often used to confirm degree equivalency, but it is important to have an official report in the required format and for the relevant country. A draft or online information may be useful for reference, but an official report is usually needed for filing.
Where people go wrong - from the chats
- mistakeAn error in the job description can lead to a misinterpretation of USCIS requirements and a visa denial.
- mistakeTo work as a psychologist in the U.S., a license may be required, complicating the immigration process and visa acquisition.
- mistakeWe indicated 'entrepreneur' instead of a profession in the petition, which lowered the chances of approval.
- mistakeA common mistake is underestimating the importance of wording in documents, including the job title, experience description, and educational materials. Incorrect or poorly chosen titles can create unnecessary questions.
- mistakeYou should not rely only on old diplomas or formal education. For sensitive fields, officers may also assess current work, a career break, research area, software, and possible TAL risks.
- mistakeDiscrepancies between information in applications and the education documents brought to the interview can raise questions, so information in the forms should be checked against the actual documents before submission.
Real timelines named in the chats
| Stage | Typically | Note |
|---|---|---|
| F-1/J-1: waiting after administrative processing, considering documents from the educational institution | no fixed timeframe | It was noted that there is no set timeline from the State Department for F-1 and J-1; continuation of the process also depends on the university's readiness to issue updated I-20 or DS-2019 forms. |
Myths and reality
Myth: EB-2 is always faster and easier than EB-1 if you have strong education or experience.
In reality: EB-2 may be a more suitable category for some applicants, but timelines depend on country of birth, the visa bulletin, and number availability. For some countries, the EB-2 wait can be very long.
Myth: 5 years of professional experience automatically and exactly replace 2 years of a master's degree for immigration qualification.
In reality: Such experience can be counted as an education equivalent only with a proper evaluation of diplomas and experience; this is not an automatic or guaranteed substitute, and the conclusion depends on the specific expert review and category requirements.
Myth: EB-2 or EB-2 NIW are impossible without higher education or a degree higher than a master's.
In reality: EB-2 can be supported either through an advanced degree or through exceptional ability. NIW does not require a degree above a master's specifically, but it does require a convincing showing of EB-2 eligibility and a separate waiver justification. A higher degree can help, but by itself it does not guarantee success.
Rules and tips from the chats
- ruleThe visa validity period is not the same as the period of lawful stay: for a student, lawful presence usually depends on maintaining status and enrollment in an educational institution.
- ruleCitizenship in another country or long-term residence outside the country of origin do not guarantee that there will be no administrative processing. The review may consider place of birth, past citizenship, education, profession, travel, and other factors.
- tipTo assess the risks of entry, administrative processing, or refusal, you need to consider the visa type, education, specialty, history of prior checks, and the individual details of the case.
- ruleNot every educational institution can issue documents for F-1. The school or college must be authorized to issue Form I-20, so this point should be checked separately before paying for courses.
- ruleFor F-1, the key document is the I-20. Questions about its issuance, cancellation, or modification usually need to be resolved through the educational institution or program organizer.
