US talent visa for beauty professionals

Updated: Author: Alina Kanametova

In the beauty industry, awards and competitions, media mentions, shows and exhibitions, plus judging and original techniques all work.

Key answer

The beauty industry goes through the same ten criteria, with no allowance for the field. Awards, judging competitions and training other professionals usually work. The difficulty is elsewhere: the officer is not obliged to know what counts as significant here, so the level of the competition, the jury and the number of entrants have to be evidenced explicitly.

From community practice

  • For membership and awards, members advise keeping the organization's official selection criteria - the officer needs to see that admission is merit-based.

  • Regional or niche outlets can also help if they have independent editorial control and measurable reach in your field - not only global brands.

  • The community reminds that the same piece of evidence cannot be counted under several criteria at once - the officer expects separate evidence for each.

From community discussions

  • «I have had many clients from the beauty industry, including nail services and permanent makeup. They all received approval without any issues. By the way, they all had scientific articles, authored books, and numerous international awards, and their education included both legal and economic backgrounds.»

  • «I am also a makeup artist, and I believe being an independent makeup artist is more prestigious than being someone’s assistant, as being an assistant implies that you are always 'behind' someone. For this visa, you need to demonstrate your leadership position and that you are the best among all.»

  • «I have reviewed so many cases and examples over a couple of years of investigations that I don't quite agree with the 5-6 years of intensive work. Just recently, I spoke with a girl who won a barber championship in one year. Before that, she didn't have any high accolades. All her evidence was centered around that one championship, after which she started getting media coverage, interviews, and invitations to be a judge, etc. In the end, the active evidence was only from that last year. The result - approval without an RFE right away.»

  • «If you are just starting out, you can think about who might give you a recommendation letter, but don't stress too much about it. Each recommendation letter supports a specific criterion in your petition. If your friend, the colorist, can confirm with their substantial expert opinion that you made some unique contribution to the field (for example), then of course the letter will be very helpful. So, base it on what this person can confirm about you. You will still write all the letters yourself and just give them for signature. Spoiler alert, ChatGPT does an excellent job with this task. Just make sure to proofread after it.»

Which criteria this field actually closes

  • Publications about the applicant and their work: for hairstylists, makeup artists, stylists, nail technicians, models, and beauty bloggers, this criterion is real if there are materials in professional, fashion, lifestyle, or industry media where the applicant is not just mentioned but presented as a notable specialist.
  • Participation in significant projects and productions: this can be satisfied through shoots for magazines, editorial projects, fashion shoots, film, awards, advertising campaigns, international collaborations, and work on teams with well-known brands or artists.
  • Judging and evaluating the work of other specialists: achievable through serving on juries for contests, championships, selections, professional events, beauty competitions, hackathons, or creative projects, if the judging role is real and documented.
  • Original contribution to the industry: possible, but it requires strong presentation - proprietary techniques, training methods, product development, original courses, noticeable influence on the practice of other specialists, and the introduction of new approaches in a salon, school, or project.

In the beauty industry, the association membership criterion is often weak: simple paid membership rarely works. It only has value if selection is based on achievements and this can be proven.
