US talent visa from Georgia: O-1, EB-1A, consulates

Updated: Author:

Where applicants from Georgia interview, what the path from petition to visa looks like, which documents to translate and how to benchmark salary, plus community answers.

Key answer

In short

For applicants from Georgia, and for relocated people living there, the home post is the US Embassy in Tbilisi. The community mentions Tbilisi for visa-free entry for many and convenient logistics, so third-country nationals use it heavily too; because of that, members advise checking timelines and slots in advance. For O-1 (DS-160) you can book at almost any consulate; for EB-1 after the NVC the interview is assigned by default to the country of permanent residence, so for residents of Georgia that is Tbilisi. Neighbouring posts covered here are Yerevan and Istanbul.

The typical path

  1. 1

Petition with USCIS: O-1 (I-129, through a petitioner or agent) or EB-1A (I-140, self-petition allowed). The approval is roughly half of the journey.

  2. 2

The form: DS-160 for O-1 (nonimmigrant, MRV fee and booking via ustraveldocs) or DS-260 for EB-1A (immigrant, in CEAC after the NVC fee, one per family member).

  3. 3

Booking in Tbilisi; if slots are short, Yerevan or Istanbul as a TCN.

  4. 4

Medical with a panel physician, the interview; a 221(g) or administrative processing is possible.

  5. 5

Visa issuance, entry and an online check of the I-94; for EB-1A the USCIS Immigrant Fee is paid separately and the green card arrives by mail at a US address.

Documents and translations

Documents in Georgian and Russian are filed with an English translation; USCIS does not require a certified translator, but do not certify your own translation. If you moved to Georgia from another country, police certificates will be needed both from the country of citizenship and from Georgia if you lived there longer than the threshold. A Russian certificate can be requested at a Russian consulate in most countries and takes about a week.

Salary comparison

The high-salary criterion is benchmarked against the market of the country where you actually worked and paid taxes, for your occupation, not against US salaries. If you worked in Georgia, compare against the Georgian market for the role; if you moved recently and the income was earned elsewhere, compare against the market of the country where you paid taxes. The community advises combining several sources at once: official statistics, a paid certificate from a major job site with a salary-level breakdown, open international salary reviews by country and profession, and showing the top of the range, not only the average. In members experience officers dispute the comparison method more often than the number.

Community questions

Approval stories

From community practice

  • Premium processing speeds up adjudication but does not raise the chance of approval - the community repeats this constantly: evidence quality decides, not speed.

  • An RFE is not a denial. Members note that a structured response with additional independent evidence often leads to approval.

  • A strong petition usually meets more than the required minimum of three criteria, with a margin on each - common advice in chats to reduce RFE risk.

Distilled from public community chats - observations, not legal advice.

From community discussions

  • «Usually this means that formally the criteria are met, but in the officer's opinion they're not enough to establish that the beneficiary is among the small percentage at the very top of the field. There's work at a respected company, but the critical capacity isn't proven, and so on.»

community member · from public community chats

  • «If it ties in somehow with your contribution to the industry, that your personal methods and developments were used in lectures, etc., then you can add it as one of the pieces of evidence for the contribution-to-industry criterion. Or else only in final merits.»

community member · from public community chats

  • «And if there are no old articles, how suspicious will it be that I started publishing. Even if I keep a 2-month interval? Can the release of articles be tied to publishing, for example, of a unique method or a "contribution" to the community? For example, I published some unique method and it started getting cited in the media? For an O1 visa is that also critical or does it relate more to EB1?»

Frequently asked questions

Can I interview in another country as a third-country national (TCN)?
Many nonimmigrant visas (including O-1) can be applied for as a TCN, but booking and slot availability depend on the post and current policy. For immigrant visas (EB-1) the interview is assigned by default to the country of permanent residence; a move to another post is requested in writing through the NVC. Always verify on ustraveldocs and travel.state.gov.
Can I do the medical outside the interview country?
The consulate only cares about the sealed form from an accredited centre, not the country: medicals done in Moscow, Almaty or Serbia were accepted at interviews elsewhere. It does depend on the post, so confirm in advance.
Which countries do I need police certificates from?
From your country of residence, your country of citizenship and every country where you lived longer than the threshold (members cite 6 and 12 months), plus anywhere you were arrested. Validity is set by the receiving post, so order the certificate when you are about to submit documents to the NVC, not in advance.
