Portfolio

Building evidence: recommendation letters, translations, business plan.

Key answer

Evidence for the petition is not a portfolio of achievements but a set of answers to specific officer questions. Every document in your appendix should demonstrate not "I'm great," but a satisfied criterion point: who is confirming it, how are they qualified to know, and why is it significant in your field.

Build from your weakest criterion, not your strongest

The case relies on the weakest satisfied criterion. You usually have enough material for your strongest points, so it's better to focus on what's lacking. The case readiness assessment shows what needs attention.

What to include for your situation

  • Criteria based on people and roles - leading role, original contribution, judging. The key work here is in the recommendation letters and how they are written.
  • Criteria based on publications - authorship and media outlets. What matters are the publication's metrics, not the number of citations to you.
  • Applying for EB-2 NIW - in addition to the standard documents, you need a business plan read not as an investor pitch, but as justification of national interest.
  • Documents not in English - each must have a translation and translator's certificate, or the officer simply will not consider them.

Recommendation Letters

A letter is effective when the recommender states facts and grounds their knowledge, not just gives opinions. Start with a general outline, then build paragraph by paragraph.

How Strong Are Your Publications?

A publication alone does not satisfy a criterion: you must show why the outlet is reputable and to whom. Different metrics and evidence are needed for scientific journals and major media.

What to do next

Once you have your materials ready, the next question is how to organize them and who submits the petition. See the "Prepare and File" section. For details on formatting supporting documents so they will be accepted, there is a separate guide based on real USCIS requests: how to format evidence.

From community discussions

  • «USCIS talks about comparable evidence if direct evidence can't be found. Membership in an association in an adjacent field can count if there are few associations for the specific profession.»

Andrey · from public community chats

  • «You can have membership in organizations/federations/associations where you don't receive a salary, list them as current. And in general it's all just for show, just to fill in the information about you, they're not going to dig up your organizations' documentation and check the termination orders.»

Nikolay · from public community chats

  • «For a specialist, citations don't matter) you just need the fact that you published scientific articles and that's it, at least 2 of them, both for O-1 and for EB, this criterion doesn't prove extraordinary ability on its own )»
